Open Studio * Independent Studio Time

Open Studio/Studio Assistant

We have one opportunity for a Studio Assistant with Open Studio privileges. The position could be considered a work/study experience, an apprenticeship, an internship, or whatever. In any case, you would have fairly free access to our studio, and in exchange, you would help us with some of the tasks involved in studio and gallery operations. The exact terms and relationship we would have going forward will be determined through dialogue and negotiation.

The position is filled at this time, however it things change well let you know if you indicate interest.

Saturday Morning Independent Studio Time

This Saturday morning independent studio is for experienced potters — preferably former Fireborn students with six (6) or more terms of enrollment — who are ready to work on their own, without regular instruction.

The goal is a stable, ongoing group, interested in building a community, and enrolling term after term.

More information about how this format differs from previous Fireborn classes can be found here:

🔍What This Studio Time (“Class”) Is

  • A three-hour weekly session (i.e. Saturdays 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.).
  • A collaborative independent studio format — no formal instruction.
  • A group of about 10–12 intermediate-to-advanced potters, each working according to their own artistic direction.
  • Participants share studio responsibilities (keeping the space clean, loading and unloading kilns, mixing glazes, and drying and storing their own wares).
  • Two members act as group leaders with access to the space and materials as needed.
  • Occasional informal critiques or demos by Fireborn’s Dan Vito may happen, but are not guaranteed.
  • This format works best for potters who want consistent access, value continuity, and are prepared to commit to the group term after term.
  • This is not an opportunity to do production pottery.

Questions

Whether you love to make pots, but have no intention of quitting your day job, or your five-year plan is to be a self sufficient, full time artist/potter with a good income, how can you do it?

Should you take classes, set up a studio at home, rent studio space, buy a building? Do your plans include employees? How will you sell?

How do you learn and grow? YouTube? Workshops? College? Classes? Do you need help? Do you need a critique? How do you connect with other potters? Do you need a sales venue? How do you develop your artistic voice and a vocabulary of forms, marks, techniques etc.?

What firing temperature and atmosphere do you want? What kind of kiln?

Whatever your goals, you may need some sort of support. What kind of support works for you at this stage in your development? Let us know.

So many questions!!
